< Gemini 8 Gemini 9 Gemini 10 >

The Gemini 9 embroidered patch, as seen in these details from various photos, shows the Gemini spacecraft in rendezvous with an Agena target vehicle and an astronaut performing an EVA.

It can be clearly seen that the crew (and support staff) wore the patches without the name tab.

The Crew Patch

The Gemini 9 crew patch was apparently produced in a single piece including a tab at the bottom with the names of the crew.

Perhaps as a mark of respect for the original Gemini 9 crew they replaced, the crew wore patches with the name tab trimmed off on their spacesuits for the flight. Original examples of the patch that have come to market sometimes have the tab still attached and sometimes have it trimmed off ( see example ).

The patch is exceptionally rare in either form, with the most recent unflown example to come to market selling for $1252[1], and a flown example selling for over $5000 [2].

The patch measures approximately 4" wide by 3½" high (102x90mm) with the tab.

[2] Flown untrimmed version - Heritage Auctions September 21, 2007 lot 25080 at $5078.75 (inc buyer's fees).

Crew Patch AB Emblem Other Manufacturers

This patch, produced by an unkown manufacturer, is the design worn by the Gemini 9 crew on their space suits. [4x3½" / 102x90mm]

The AB Emblem version of the patch is crude and incorportates the crew names into a tabless design. [approx 3" / 75mm]

An unusual vintage Gemini 9 patch which merges the lower name tab of the crew version into the main body of the patch. [3¾" / 97mm]
