When they stepped out of the recovery helicopter onto the deck of the U.S.S. Ticonderoga the Apollo 17 crew were wearing orange jumpsuits with an embroidered mission patch attached. The high-res photos from their arrival on the ship, and from later that day, yield quite clear detailed close-up images as shown below. |

The photographic evidence shows that the patch worn by the Apollo 17 crew on their post-flight jump suits is almost certainly the AB Emblem mission patch as shown here. I had previously suggested here that this patch was not particularly rare and therefore not really considered a "crew patch" but it may be that this "white eagle" version (the more common AB Emblem version has the eagle embroidered in pale blue) is more scarce than I thought. In any case examples sealed in plastic packets and with AB Emblem stickers on the reverse recently sold for $230[1] and $307[2]. There is another patch for the Apollo 17 mission that can definitely be considered a crew patch, as noted below. |

|
Although they didn't use them on their flight suits, the Apollo 17 crew had made for them a set of special oversize (5") patches with the intials of each crewmember sewn into the pattern. Because the patch worn by the crew is a common one these intialled patches, produced in a run of just 150 examples per crewmember, are regarded by collectors as the crew patch for the Apollo 17 mission. These crew patches were actually made by AB Emblem. Since they were never available to the general public they are extremely scarce, although examples from what seems to be a production overrun came to market in 2005/6. By my count there were roughly 150 each of the RE and HS patches sold at this time, along with about 60 EC versions. |
